Leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League on Sunday morning took positions with flags and sticks at eight entry points and different strategic points in the capital to resist the BNP’s ‘March for Democracy’ programme.

AL men also brought out processions carrying sticks and flags at various places, including Karwrn Bazar, Segunbagicha, Jatiya Press Club and Mouchak in the city.

Under the banner of Awami League Samarthak Gosthi, a large number of activists of AL and its front organisations took position and formed a human chain in front of AL central office at Bangabandhu Avenue protesting the violence what they said unleashed by BNP-Jamaat men.

Speaking on the occasion, AL city unit general secretary Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya said Khaleda Zia should quit politics as people did not respond to her call to join Sunday’s programme.

“People don’t respond to Khaleda Zia’s call any more. No one joins her programme. She shouldn’t do politics any more. She should retire,” he added.

He also said Awami League will always be there on vigil to protect democracy.

Besides, AL leaders and activists brought out procession in Kalabagan, Dhanmondi, Hazaribagh, New Market, Ramna, Lalbagh, Sutrapur, Kotwali Thana, Demra, Shyampur, Bimanbandar, Cantonment, Khilkhet, Uttara, Turag, Kafrul, Mirpur, Pallabi, Khilgaon and Sabujbag, areas of the city, AL sources said.
