Chandpur

A local Jubo Dal man was killed and several blockaders were injured in firing by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in Sadar upazila on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Faruk Patwary, 35, son of Mona Patwary of Mandari village in the upazila. He was a fruit seller by profession.

Police super M Amir Zafar said a BGB patrol team along with executive magistrate Aminur Rahman was going to Hajiganj upazila from the district town as part of their routine work.

However, as the patrol team of the border guards reached Mahamaya Bazar area on Chandpur-Comilla regional highway around 5:15pm, several hundred opposition men attacked them, he said.

They pelted the BGB members with brick chunks and vandalised one of their vehicles.

At one stage, the paramilitary force members got down from their vehicles and chased the blockaders.

However, the blockaders encircled them from three corners and threw pebbles at them.

Finding no other way, the BGB men opened fire in self defence that left several blockaders injured, said additional police super Quamrul Islam.

Badly injured Faruk was rushed to Chandpur General Hospital where on-duty doctor Ahmed Kajal declared him dead, he said.

The injured were taken to different hospitals and clinics, said BNP sources.

Meanwhile, district BNP general secretary Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik condemned the BGB firing.
