Gazipur records sharp rise in coronavirus cases

The number of coronavirus cases has been increasing in Gazipur.

Until Sunday, the district confirmed 23 cases. But the number was 11 on Saturday and six on Friday, UNB reports.

Besides, 13 staff and workers, including the civil surgeon, are now in home quarantine, after a night guard of the health department was diagnosed with coronavirus, said Pronoy Kumar Bhushon, Sreepur upazila health official.

People are ignoring social distancing rules in the densely-populated district. Low-income people such as day labourers, rickshaw pullers and auto-rickshaw drivers are still coming out of their homes amid shutdown, he said.

The staff at the health department are working hard to prevent the spread of coronavirus. They are also collecting samples by going from door to door, he added.

Bangladesh on Sunday recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases in one day as 139 more people tested positive, raising the total number to 621.

Besides, four more people died from coronavirus during the period raising the death toll to 34 while the global death toll from coronavirus reached 114,247 on Monday morning.

A number of districts and areas across the country have been put under lockdown by the local administration to contain the spread of coronavirus.
