Ex-VC of BOU Prof Aminul Islam passes away

Eminent educationist and former Vice Chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) Dr M Aminul Islam passed away due to old age complications in a city hospital on Friday. He was 81.

 

Dr M Aminul Islam, a former professor of Geography & Environment department of the Dhaka University (DU), died at LabAid Hospital in the evening.

 

He left behind wife, one son, one daughter, several grandchildren and many students and well-wishers to mourn his death, said a DU press release.

 

His first namaj-e-janaza will be held on Dhaka University Central Mosque premises after Johor prayers on Saturday. Prior to the namj-e-janaza, his body will be placed in front of the department building on the DU campus for people to pay their tributes.

 

Prof Aminul served as a DU senate and syndicate member, academic council member, science faculty dean, geography department chairman, president of DU teachers association and provost of Shahidullah Hall in his long teaching profession.

 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Prof Aminul Islam.

 

In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina said Prof Aminul Islam was an honest, sincere and dedicated teacher and researcher. “His contributions towards realising the rights of people are endless,” she said.

 

The Prime Minister said the nation will ever remember with gratitude his contribution towards higher education and research as the BOU Vice Chancellor. “The nation has lost an eminent educationist at his death,” she said.

 

DU VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique also condoled the death of Prof Aminul Islam.
