DUCSU VP Nurul, 3 others at ICU after attack by ‘BCL, Muktijuddha Mancha’

DUCSU vice president Nurul Haque and three of his associates have been taken to intensive care unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Muktijuddha Mancha allegedly carried out an attack on them.Three others are Nurul’s younger brother Aminur, his close associate and Jagannath University student APM Sohel and another university student Tuhin Farabi.

BCL is the student wing of ruling Awami League while Muktijuddha Mancha is a platform of freedom fighters’ descendants.

A total of 24 people were injured in the attack carried out at the office of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union on Dhaka University campus on Sunday.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, DMCH casualty block resident surgeon Alauddin said the condition of Farabi is critical. “He has been suffering from shivering,” added the physician.

The three injured have been kept at the ICU of DMCH’s emergency department, he said adding that the rest are under observation. All of them bore injury marks, he also said.

Protesting against the attack, the activists of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) will stage demonstrations at every educational institution across the country tomorrow, Monday.

DUCSU’s social affairs secretary Akhtar Hossain, also a BGSRPC leader, told newsmen in the evening, “We’ll launch a movement if no action is taken against the attackers within 24 hours. Many of the injured have been undergoing treatment at private hospitals.”

DUCSU vice-president Nurul Haque and at least 24 others were injured in the attack allegedly carried out by the activists of BCL and Muktijuddha Mancha.

Tuhin Farabi kept on life support on 22 December, 2019. Photo: Prothom AloBesides, DUCSU VP Nurul, Rukmia Hossain Raz, Golam Kibria and Zahidul Islam of Kabi Nazrul College, Ariful Islam of Jahangirnagar University and Moshiur Rahman of Dhaka University, among others, were injured in the attack.

Witnesses said Nurul and some activists of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) came under the attack when he was holding a meeting at his DUCSU office around 1:00pm.

The activists of BCL and a faction of Muktijuddha Mancha allegedly hurled brick chips at Nurul’s DUCSU office room when he and some of his associates were there around 12:30pm.

At one stage, BCL DU unit president Sanjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hossain along with their followers reached in front of the DUCSU office and asked them to come out but Nurul denied, leading to an altercation.

DUCSU VP Nurul was heard asking Sanjit, “Why did you come here? You don’t belong to DUCSU.”

“You’ll understand who I’m,” Sanjit said to Nurul and after that both Sanjit and Saddam left the scene but their followers attacked Nurul and his associates.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital director AKM Nasir Uddin told Prothom Alo that around 15 to 20 injured had been admitted at the DMCH.

They were being given treatment with highest priority, he added.

Earlier on 17 December, DUCSU VP Nurul came under another attack on the Dhaka University (DU) campus reportedly by the Muktijoddha Mancha activists.
