 Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed on Monday apprised President Abdul Hamid of the ongoing activities of Election Commission (EC) including updating voters list and delimitation of constituencies.

The CEC paid a courtesy call on the President at the Bangabhaban. He was accompanied by all the four election commissioners – Mohammad Abdul Mobarak, Mohammad Abu Hafiz, Brig Gen (rtd) Zabed Ali and Shah Nawaz.

During the meeting, CEC Kazi Rakibuddin and other election commissioners congratulated Abdul Hamid for becoming the 20th President of the country.

The CEC informed the President about the progress of updating voters list and national identity (NID) cards with photographs, reforming electoral laws and delimiting the existing constituencies.

He told the President that election commission till May 10 held a total of 5,636 polls in different categories, including presidential, parliamentary by-elections, city corporations, upazilas, paurashavas and union parishads during the tenure of the present government.

The CEC also informed the President about the progress of four ongoing election commission projects – ‘construction of upazila and regional server station for election database (CSSED)’; ‘strengthening election management in Bangladesh (SEMB)’; ‘construction of election resource centre (ERC)’; and ‘identification system for enhancing access to service (IDEAS) of the commission’.

President Abdul Hamid gave the EC delegation a patient hearing and expressed satisfaction over the activities of the election commission.

Concerned Secretaries of the President’s office were present.

After the meeting, CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed told journalists that he is hopeful that all political parties would participate in the next general elections.

He said: “We’re taking all preparations to hold the elections to Dhaka North and South City Corporations as well as the next general election.”
