A case was filed against 704 people, including former Gazipur city mayor and former Awami League city unit general secretary Md Jahangir Alam on several charges, including murder and explosion during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s grand rally on October 28, 2023.
The prominent accused in the case included former shipping minister Shahjahan Khan, former law minister Kamrul Hasan, Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon, Juba League general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, former Barishal city mayor Sadik Abdullah, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Md Habibur Rahman, former DMP detective branch chief Harun Or Rashid, former DMP joint commissioner Biplab Kumar Sarkar and former Police Bureau of Investigation chief Banaj Kumar Majumder.
BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal former central committee member Md Abbas Ali filed the case with the Paltan police station on Saturday for killing Juba Dal Dhaka north city unit member Shamim Molla on October 28 in an area adjacent to Hotel Living International at Paltan at about 2:45pm.
Plaintiff Abbas also confirmed the matter to New Age.
‘The prime accused Jahangir and others attacked Shamim and me on the day. Shamim was killed by bullets and attacks with sharp weapons. They also exploded crude bombs,’ Abbas told New Age.
He said that Jahangir was the prime accused in the case as he launched the attack plotted by then DMP DB chief Harun to foil the BNP’s rally.
Paltan police sub-inspector Tonmoy Kumar Biswas, also the investigation officer in the case, said that they had recorded the case on Saturday.
According to the case statement, 10, 000-12,000 unidentified activists of the AL and its associate bodies, including Chhatra League and Juba League were also made accused in the case.
Witnesses and local people took Shamim to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but the family came to knew about his death on the next day despite waiting at the police station, the statement said.
Then Paltan police station officer-in-charge Saleh Uddin showed the case to be natural death and gave final report to save errant police officials and Awami League leaders, the statement added.
The statement also said that the OC destroyed evidence in the case.
