Two men were arrested in separate incidents in Chattogram city today over allegations of attempting to rape two children, police said.

The incidents occurred in Hajipara and Mandatila areas.

The arrestees were identified as Md Ehsan, 45, a security guard and resident of Jalal Colony in Hajipara, and Md Hasan, 40, also a security guard from Mandatila.

According to police, in the Hajipara incident, two children were playing in the area around noon when Ehsan allegedly called a 10-year-old into a walled space and attempted to sexually assault the victim.

Officer-in-Charge of Double Mooring Police Station Jamal Uddin Khan said locals caught the suspect and called the national emergency service 999. Police later arrived at the scene and took Ehsan into custody.

Police said some residents of the colony protested when officers attempted to take Ehsan away. Officers later persuaded them and brought the suspect to the police station.

In a separate incident in Mandatila, Hasan allegedly attempted to rape a five-year-old.

Officer-in-Charge of Bayezid Bostami Police Station Abdul Karim said police rushed to the scene after receiving information and detained the suspect.

Police said both children were admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Cases were filed with the respective police stations in connection with both incidents, police added.

The incidents came a day after another alleged attempted child rape incident in Chattogram’s Bakalia area sparked tension between residents and police.

On Thursday, locals clashed with police and blocked roads, demanding that a suspect accused of attempting to rape a child be handed over to them. Police later rescued the accused and sent him to jail.
