Youth mercilessly beaten by traffic policemen

Several traffic policemen have beaten a rickshaw passenger severely in Russel Square near Shukrabad bus stand area of the capital.

The victim is Md Mahiful Islam, 21, hailed from Jamalpur. He works in a shop in Elephant Road, Dhaka.

The incident took place at around 2pm on Thursday while the victim was talking to them regarding traffic signal.

Mahiful told the Dhaka Tribune that he was sitting in a rickshaw in Rusel Square traffic signal for a long time. At one stage, he asked the traffic police Kalam about the delay of the traffic signal.

During the time, Kalam used abuse language which was protested by the Mahiful, he said.

Later, Kalam dragged Mahiful from the rickshaw and beat him severely. Then all the policemen of the police box joined in the beating, leaving Mahiful injured.

Injured Mahiful was admitted to Greenline Hospital in Panthapath area and after primary treatment he was taken to the police box.

During the incident, some 200-300 pedestrians thronged and protested it. They also attacked the police box.

On information, Dhanmondi police station OC Iqbal, SI Atik rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.

At one stage, they charged batons on the mobs to disperse them, leaving 5-6 people injured.
