Workers protest in Mirpur

A group of ready-made garment workers blocked the capital’s Mirpur Road on Wednesday to protest against the ‘closure of a unit without prior notice.’

Three workers were picked during the demonstrations that coincided with an Opposition strike.

Witnesses said workers of eight Shewrapara factories were upset tio see their units shut with notices of a two-day closure.

As they blocked the Mirpur road and started to demonstrate, police baton-charged and then lobbed sound grenades to disperse them, witnesses said.

Some workers were injured. One Sakhina Begum, 45, and her daughter Shirin were admitted to EXIM Bank hospital.

Sumi, worker of MM Shirts of Shanin Group, told bdnews24.com that they were agitating on a five-point charter of demands.

“We went home on Tuesday evening, came on Wednesday morning and saw the two day closure notice. Nobody was informed about it.”

Operator Mohammad Jamal, worker of Alfa Garments of the same group, said they joined the protests after seeing the notice in the morning.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Pallabi zone Assistant Deputy Commissioner Iftekhar Ahmed said the factory owner was going to talk to the workers but the protests started off before he could.
