Two vehicles used by the president and general secretary of Jamalpur’s Islampur upazila unit of BNP were allegedly vandalised on Friday evening following a dispute between two groups of party activists.
The incident took place around 7:30pm at the Dakbangla premises in the upazila. No injuries were reported.
According to local sources, the altercation stemmed from a reception programme organised at Molomganj Model College for Sultan Mahmud Babu, lawmaker from Jamalpur-2 (Islampur) and president of the upazila BNP.
An argument reportedly broke out between Rashedul, joint general secretary of the municipal BNP, and Shakil, joint general secretary of the upazila Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, and between Hasmat, student affairs secretary of the upazila BNP, and Hasan, student affairs secretary of the municipal BNP.
The dispute later escalated when a group, allegedly led by Hasmat and Hasan, went to the Dakbangla premises and vandalised two vehicles used by Sultan Mahmud Babu and Islampur upazila BNP General Secretary Nurul Islam Nabab.
“We had parked our vehicles at the Dakbangla premises and gone upstairs. A group of people came and first vandalised the MP’s vehicle. They then damaged my vehicle as well,” Nurul Islam Nabab told The Daily Star.
He said the two damaged vehicles are now in police custody and that no complaint has been filed so far.
“We will act in line with whatever decision the party takes,” he added.
Repeated attempts to contact Sultan Mahmud Babu were unsuccessful as he did not answer his phone, while Hasmat and Hasan could not be reached for comment.
Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said police rushed to the scene after receiving information and brought the situation under control.
“The two vandalised vehicles have been kept in police custody. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed,” the OC said.
