UP chairman accused of corruption

Moshiur Rahman, Sreepur Union Council chairman, also a local AL leader was charged with corruption including taking bribe in exchange for jobs, embezzlement of school funds, felling govt trees and illegal drug business.

Md Akheruzzaman, another local AL leader brought these allegations through a press release yesterday.

According to the press release, Moshiur misappropriated Tk30 lakh from the construction of two markets of Sreepur MC Pilot Secondary School.

Sources said he constructed the markets without any tender. Though he submitted a voucher of Tk80 lakh for the construction, expenditure was not more than Tk50 lakh. He is alleged to have misappropriated Tk30 lakh in this manner. He also distributed the shops in exchange for bribes and misappropriated at least  Tk10 lakh.

He appointed 13 teachers in the school in exchange for bribe and misappropriated Tk40 lakh.

Requesting anonymity, a teacher of the school, said Moshier had taken money for appointing teachers at different times in the name of school development donation. He took allotment of test relief goods a number of times in the name of Atiar Rahman Sreeti Sangsad. In this way, he misappropriated Tk5 lakh.

He cut down trees of Sreepur Health Centre and misappropriated Tk2 lakh by selling the trees.

Allegedly, he is also running an illegal drug business in the area. As he is a leader of the ruling party, law enforcement agency is silent in this regard.

When contacted, the upazila chairman Badrul Alam Hero said:  “I think a union parishad chairman like Moshier cannot be millionaire without being massively corrupt.”

Moshiur denied the allegations and said: “I have done a lot of development work during the last five years. Some unscrupulous persons are jealous of it. I am a victim of their conspiracy.”
