A Dhaka court on Monday began the trial of Obaidul Khan, the lone accused in the murder case of 14-year-old schoolgirl Suraiya Akhter Risha.

Judge Abul Kashem of Eight Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court framed charges against Obaidul and set May 8 to record testimony of the witnesses of the murder.

Accused Obaidul was present on the dock.

Earlier on September 6, 2016, Obaidul confessed to the crime before a metropolitan magistrate in Dhaka saying that he stabbed Suraiya, a Class VIII student at Willes Little Flower School and College at Kakrail in Dhaka, in the abdomen on August 24 as she rejected his proposal for love.

Obaidul went into hiding after stabbing Suraiya in the abdomen and in the left hand on August 24.

The youth Obaidul, a staff of a tailoring shop at Eastern Mollika Shopping Mall, was arrested in Nilphamari on August 31, three days after the schoolgirl succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on August 28.
