An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir was killed and over 15 people were injured in a sporadic clash between activists of Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League at Chittagong University on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Mamun Hossain, organising secretary of Shah Amanat Hall unit of Shibir and a fourth year student of Marine Science Department of the university. He hailed from Noakhali district.

Of the injured, three were identified as Shibir activists Rahat Hossain, first year Physics student; and Amzad Hossain, also first year student of Mathematics Department; and BCL activist Enamul Haque, second year History student of the university.

Witnesses said the BCL activists brought out a procession on the campus protesting the Shibir attack on one of their fellows in Sylhet at noon.

When the procession came in front of Shibir-dominated Shah Amanat Hall, Shibir activists allegedly opened fire on them from the dormitory.

Later, the BCL men, armed with locally made weapons and sticks, took position in front of the hall at noon.

The activists of the student wing of Awami League stormed into the dormitory around 4 pm, triggering a clash that left at least 16 people injured.

Some of the critically inured were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where Mamun succumbed to his injuries.

On information, additional police rushed in and brought the situation under control.

AFM Nizam Uddin, assistant police super (Hathazari circle), said they detained 18 Shibir activists for their involvement in the clashes.

Meanwhile, a Shibir leader on condition of anonymity claimed to UNB that their three activists, including Mamun, were killed in the clash.

Police, however, denied the Shibir leader’s claim.
