The government is yet to take any decision on an application that sought extension of its order through which BNP Chairperson Khalda Zia was released for six months, Law Minister Anisul Huq said today.

“I have heard that an application seeking extension of Khaleda Zia’s release has been sent to the law ministry by the home ministry,” the minister said.

“The application has not reached me yet. I will take decision on the application when it reaches me,” he added.

He did not provide further details on this issue.

Khaleda Zia, who has been convicted in two separate corruption cases, was released from prison on March 25 after 776 days.

Recently, family members of the BNP chairperson sought a six months’ extension of the government order.

Shamim Iskandar, Khaleda’s younger brother, applied to the home ministry seeking the extension, said the former prime minister’s family members.

Seeking anonymity, a lawyer who prepared the documents said the letter that secured release for Khaleda earlier was submitted again this time from her family members.

Physicians said the 75-year-old former prime minister was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, ophthalmological and dental ailments.
