Detective branch of police arrested one more Hefajat-e-Islam leader from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area this afternoon.

The arrestee was identified as Maulana Khurshid Alam Quasemi, an assistant secretary general of the Islamist group.

A team of detectives arrested him from his Mohammadpur residence around 5:00pm, said Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Maulana Khurshid, also the Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, was arrested in a case filed following Hefajat’s violence in 2013, he added.

With him, at least 12 top leaders of the group were arrested.

Meanwhile, another DB team arrested Khelafat Majlish’s joint secretary Mufti Sharafat Hossain from Mirpur around 5:00pm.

He was involved in Hefajat’s violence in 2013 and March this year, Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DB-Gulshan) of DMP told The Daily Star.

Mufti Sharafat is directly involved in Hefajat but does not hold any post, police and Hefajat leaders said.
