Man killed in mob beating over ‘cattle theft’ in Jhenaidah

A man was beaten to death by villagers over allegations of cattle theft in Jhenaidah’s Kaliganj early today, while his brother was rescued by police in a critical condition.

The deceased is Habib Hossain, 48, while the injured was Habib’s brother Sumon Hossain, 42 — both residents of Arabpur village under Jashore Kotwali Police Station, said police.

Quoting locals and witnesses, Md Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, told The Daily Star that suspected thieves entered the home of one Nilufa Yasmin in Badurgachha village early in the morning. They allegedly locked the main door of the house from the outside and stole two cows.

After hearing the cries of family members, neighbours opened the door. They all began searching the surrounding areas and at one point, villagers detained Habib and Sumon along with a stolen cow in a field in neighbouring Pirojpur village and beat them up.

Receiving information, police went to the spot around 8:30am and recovered Habib’s body. They rescued Sumon in a critical condition and admitted him to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex.

Nilufa Yasmin, a widow, said two cows were stolen from her house late at night.

Md Mahfuz Hossain, additional superintendent of police of Jhenaidah Sadar Circle, told The Daily Star that legal action would also be taken against those who took the law into their own hands.

The body has been sent to the morgue of Jhenaidah 250-Bed General Hospital for autopsy.
