Inmate commits ‘suicide’ in Chittagong jail

An inmate of Chittagong central jail has reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the stair railing of second floor of the jail on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Md Jakir Hossain, was sentenced 14-year imprisonment in an abduction case.

Md Sagir Mia, senior jail super, told the Dhaka Tribune that Jakir’s hanging body found around 8:30pm. Later, he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

“His body has been kept at the morgue for autopsy.”

However, he did not tell any reason behind the “suicide.”

He said: “Two probe committees have been formed to investigate the incident. Jail doctor Mostafizur Rahman is leading one three-member committee while another three-members committee will be led by DIG [prison] Asim Kanti Paul.”

“Two jail guards, Ziabul Islam and Md Alamgir has been suspended and an order has been issued to file departmental cases against two chief jail guards, Md Hossain and Abdur Rashid.”

“The authority took action against those jail guards for their alleged negligence in performing duty,” he further added.
