HC rejects Barrister Fakhrul’s bail pleas

The High Court on Thursday rejected the bail petition of Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam, a lawyer of war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury arrested in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict.

An HC bench comprising Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore came up with the order after the final hearing of a rule issued earlier.

The court, however, asked police to submit the probe report to the trial court as soon as possible.

Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and AJ Mohammad Ali stood for Barrister Fakhrul while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Nazmul Haque represented the state.

On April 22, the HC bench issued a rule upon authorities concerned to explain as to why the lawyer of the BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury should not be granted bail.

On November 20 last year, plain-clothes police arrested Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam in a case filed in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict on condemned convict war criminal BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

Detective Branch of police Inspector Fazlur Rahman filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on October 4.

On October 1, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the 1971 Liberation War.

However, the ICT verdict without containing the judges’ observations and sentences got circulated on different websites before it was pronounced by the tribunal.
