A female councillor of Gazipur City Corporation reportedly went missing on Friday morning.

Perveen Akhter, councillor from reserved seat (GCC wards 1,2 and 3), left her house at 8am on Friday for attending an arbitration.

Perveen’s husband Minhajul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “Perveen left our South Panisail house at 8am on Friday. She was scheduled to join an arbitration in Jirani Bazar area. She left her mobile phone in the house and did not tell us about any specific address.

“We started searching for her as she did not return home till noon. After failing to find her, I filed a general diary with Joydebpur police station at 11:30pm.”

He alleged that Dulal Hazari, the accused of Perveen’s father freedom fighter Chan Mia murder case, had threatened to kidnap her three months ago.

“But, we did not file any GD on the matter,” he said.

Joydebpur police station Officer-in-Charge SM Kamruzzaman said: “The police have started searching for the ward councillor immediately after the GD was filed. We are hopeful that she will be rescued soon.”

On Saturday morning, a person introducing him as a local journalist in Chirirbandar of Dinajpur claimed that the missing councilor was with him.

Later, police found the information to be false, Chirirbandar police station Inspector (investigation) Sumon Das Gupta told the Dhaka Tribune.

On the other hand, the locals staged a human chain in the city demanding immediate rescue of the ward councillor. The agitated locals also blocked Kaliakoir-Nabinagar Highway around 10:30am.

Joydebpur police station Sub-Inspector Mijanur Rahman said: “The locals have staged a human chain. But, the news of road blockade is not true. The situation is under control.”
