The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 on Thursday sentenced Oishee Rahman to death in a case filed over killing of her parents — special branch officer Mahfuzur Rahman and Swapna Rahman.
Judge Syed Ahmed of the tribunal passed the order at noon in presence of Oishee and two other accused — Mizanur Rahman Rony and Asaduzzaman Jony, also friends of Oishee — in the case.
A large number of police were deployed in and outside the court premises in the capital.
The court also fined Oishee Tk 20,000, in default, she has to serve one-year imprisonment. She was normal after hearing the verdict.
The judge, in his observation before delivering the verdict, said Oishee was ‘adult’ during the parricide.
She committed the murders in a planned way keeping a cool head, the observation said.
Oishee, first, killed her mother and then she did kill father to cover up the first murder, the judge continued.
The court also ordered sending the death reference and all documents related to the case to the High Court by seven working days for its approval.
Oishee can appeal to the High Court by 30 days against the verdict, the court said.
Meanwhile, defence counsel Mahbub Hossain Rana said they have not get justice and will appeal to the upper court.
The court, however, awarded two-year rigorous imprisonment to Mizanur Rahman Rony, who was on bail, for sheltering Oishee after the killings. He was also fined Tk 5,000, in default, he has to serve one-month imprisonment more.
The detained accused, Asaduzzaman Jony, was acquitted of all the charges.
The trial in the case over killing the couple had started on July 8, 2014, through recording depositions of the witnesses.
A total of 39 out of 57 witnesses made their deposition before the tribunal.
On August 16, 2013, police had recovered the bodies of SB inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman from their Chamelibagh residence in the capital.
Later, Oishee had surrendered to the police confessing to her involvement in the killing.
Police also arrested the domestic help of the couple’s house, Khadiza Akhter Sumi, and Oishee’s two friends Asaduzzaman and Mizanur in connection with the murder.
Mahfuzur’s brother Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel had filed a case with Paltan police station on August 17.
Abul Khayer, inspector of Detective Branch of Police, following medical examinations of Oishee and Sumi, had submitted two separate charge sheets – one against Oishee and her two friends on March 9, 2014, and the other against Sumi.
The medical examinations found Oishee was above 18 and Sumi was bellow 18.
