BB removes Agrani MD for ‘misuse of power’

Syed Abdul HamidBangladesh Bank has decided to remove the managing director (MD) of state-owned Agrani Bank, Syed Abdul Hamid, from his position for reported misuse of power.

BB governor Fazle Kabir took the decision following recommendation by a central bank committee in accordance with the Banking Companies Act, according to BB authorities.

The central bank’s standing committee has recently made the recommendation for removing Syed Abdul Hamid since, the committee found, he misused power in disbursing loans amounting to Tk 792 crore and violated relevant rules.

The Agrani Bank MD, Hamid, was given opportunity to defend his position during the hearing by the committee, said officials concerned.

The BB governor approved the committee’s recommendation on Wednesday. Accordingly, Hamid will be officially removed on Thursday.

When Prothom Alo contacted the official spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, Suvankar Saha, for his comments, he said he was not in a position to do so as he was on leave.

However, a high official seeiking anonymity said, “As the governor has given the approval, all preparations for the removal have been completed. Now the only thing remaining is to convey the official removal letter to Mr Hamid. The letter will be given tomorrow (Thursday)”
