The BNP-led 20-party alliance today extended its ongoing hartal till 6:00am Friday demanding immediate release of its leaders and activists arrested in “false cases”.
The announcement was made this afternoon through a press release floated to the media by BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed.
The press release said the alliance has extended the shutdown by 48 hours protesting what it said killing party leaders and activists in the name of shootouts , their wholesale arrest, restoring voting rights and democracy, filing false cases against them, repression on journalists, controls on media and the “government interference in judiciary”.
The alliance enforced the hartal from 6:00am on Sunday protesting “repression” on its leaders and activists and also demanding fresh parliamentary polls under a neutral government.
The BNP leader urged the countrymen to observe the hartal peacefully.
The shutdown extended on the top of blockade enforced by the alliance since January 6.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi City unit Shibir has called a separate hartal in Rajshahi division to be observed from 6:00am Wednesday to 6:00am Friday, protesting the arrest of the city unit Shibir president, general secretary and social welfare secretary.
