In the biggest gold haul in recent times, customs officials seized 905 gold bars, weighing 105 kg, from a Biman flight from Dubai and detained 10 people at Shah Amanat International Airport here on Tuesday.
Seven of the detainees were the Biman passengers — Shafique Islam of Mymensingh, Mansoor Islam of Munshiganj, Nahid Talukder, Mahinuddin of Raujan upazila, Peyarul Islam, Imtiaz Khan of Fatikchhari upazila and Md Yakub of Hathazari upazila in Chittagong.
Besides, three more people — Rahim Shikder, Md Faisal and Hasan Mahmud — were detained from the airport premises on suspecision of their involvement in the incident.
Tipped-off, the customs officials searched the BG026 flight of Bangladesh Biman from Dubai and recovered the gold worth 45.50 crore from several bags kept beneath the seats of the seven passengers, said Moshiur Rahman Mandal, Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Airport Customs Authority.
Parvez Al-Zaman, Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Airport Customs Authority, said today’s gold seizure was the biggest in recent times.
