On the fifth consecutive day of unrest in the garment sector Wednesday, Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir played down the ongoing demonstration that forced several hundred factories to suspend production, terming it ‘not serious’.
There is no serious trouble in the garment sector, Bangla daily Prothom Alo quoted the minister to be saying at a press briefing after separate inter-ministerial meetings on law and order during upcoming Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha.
There were some disturbances in Gazipur today (Wednesday). There were such incidents in one or two places. Nothing happened elsewhere in the country, the minister added.
The home minister ruled out any possibility of deterioration in law and order during the Puja and Eid, two biggest festivals of the Hindu and the Muslim communities.
Tight security will be enforced, as done last year, to ward off any trouble during the festivals, Prothom Alo quoted the minister as saying.
Alamgir did not reply when journalists asked for his comment on BNP acting secretary general’s allegation that a minster is responsible for the recent unrest in the garment sector.
