Law enforcers Wednesday night arrested seven suspects of a gang of 10 involved in the abduction of six-year-old Parag Mondol a day after the boy was rescued by paying a huge ransom.

Out of these seven, three persons were directly involved with the abduction and they admitted their involvement to the press while in law enforcers’ custody.

One of them, Kala Chand, used to be an employee of Parag’s father’s battery factory in Tantibazar for eight long years.

But the mastermind and the leader of the abduction group, Ameer Hossain alias Langra Ameer, a listed criminal active in the old part of the capital and Keraniganj, is still at large along with two of his close aids –Al Amin and Akash.

Ameer is a close friend of Shubhadda union unit president of Juba League Aminul Islam Jewel, and Chhatra League leader Sajedur Rahman Saju in the locality. Law enforcers are suspecting that these political leaders might have some role in the abduction.

The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested six persons who include two young students and both were physically present with motorbikes during the abduction.

The six persons are: Zahidul Hasan, 18, an HSC student of Dhania College in Shonir Akhra; Mohammad Ali Rifat, 19, a student of aeronautical engineering department at a private engineering institute in Uttara; Kala Chand, 30, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver; Abul Kashem, 35, brother-in-law of Ameer; and friends of the two students — Rizvi Ahmed Anik, 18, and Alfaz Hossain alias Masud, 18.

The Keraniganj police arrested another person named Mamun Miah, 43, of Shuvadya Purba Gram, from Munshiganj. He is also a brother in law of Ameer.

The Rab produced before the press the six persons Thursday afternoon at Rab headquarters in Uttara.

Rab officials said that while Zahid and Rifat had participated in the abduction scenario, Kala Chand acted as a spy to keep track of the movements of Parag and his family members by staying around their house before the abduction.

The remaining three Kashem, Rizvi and Alfaz had sheltered the kidnappers at their residences and kept them informed about the presence of the law enforcers.

Son of businessman Bimol Mondol, Parag Mondol was abducted on November 11 and he recovered three days later at midnight Tuesday from Atibazar of Keraniganj– two kilometers off the boy’s residence.

The criminals had also shot at his mother Lipi Mondol, sister Pinaki and their car driver Nazrul Islam when they tried to resist the abduction.

Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan, director of Rab’s Intelligence Wing, said Parag’s family paid Tk 50 lakh in cash for his release.
