You get two weeks time to prove the allegations against my client, says legal notice
BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman has sent a legal notice to Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif for making “derogatory and defamatory” statements against him.
Tarique’s lawyer Kayser Kamal issued the notice asking the ruling party leader to withdraw his statement and apologise to Tarique within two weeks.
Otherwise, legal actions would be taken against Hanif.
The notice stated that the Awami League leader accused Tarique of “holding a conspiring meeting with Indian underworld don Dawood Ibrahim” in launching the August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally.
The notice also claimed that Hanif suspected Tarique of having a close contact with al-Qaeda.
It quoted reports published in the national dailies.
The legal notice read: “You get two weeks time to prove the allegations against my client. Or you have to make a public apology and apologise to my client.”
“If you failed to do what you are asked for, I have clear instructions from my client to take legal actions against you.”
Later, the lawyer held a press conference at the office of Law Reporters’ Forum in the Supreme Court building.
Earlier on September 6, Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said Tarique Rahman might be linked with the global network of militants al-Qaeda’s announcement of using Bangladesh as their base.
The Awami League leader made the remarks while talking to reporters after distributing relief goods among families affected by fire and river erosion at Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia.
Hanif said the decision of making Bangladesh a base of al-Qaeda may have come through Tarique Rahman’s links with the militant organisation, or he might have a link with the decision.
