Police torture and death in custody see no respite under the repressive rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, illegally in authority since 2009. The latest victim is Ahmad Safa of the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). He, along with six other leaders of the JI were picked by the police on May 24, 2023 in Chittagong and were taken to remand, commonly known as torture cell, where Safa died on May 31, 2023. Safa belonged to the JI unit in Satkania, a southern district of Chittagong. (Please see the report: Jamaat leader dies in police custody in Ctg | New Age (newagebd.net)

The Coalition for Human Rights & Democracy in Bangladesh (CHRD Bangladesh) strongly condemns this police brutality. It also demands an urgent and impartial inquiry into the case, and that the responsible officials be held accountable, including those in the chain of command. CHRD Bangladesh also urges the regime to stop such heinous violations of human rights against the people.

CHRD Bangladesh also requests the local and international rights organizations to continue their fights against the continued violations of human rights by the illegal repressive regime of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh so as to bring its end the soonest.
