Speaker urges ruling, oppn parties to resolve differences

‘Election from Oct 25 to Jan 24’

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday said the nation hopes that the ruling and opposition parties will take initiatives to resolve their differences in the current session of parliament as the country is heading towards the general election.

Dr Shirin said this while delivering her welcome speech at the beginning of the 19th session of the current Parliament in the afternoon.

“As per the constitution, the general election has to be held within 90 days of the dissolution of Parliament. That means the election will be held any time from October 25 to January 24. Therefore, this 19th session of parliament is very important for various reasons,” she said.

Dr Shirin Sharmin, the country’s first female Speaker, hoped that both the ruling and opposition camps will discuss national important issues, engage in debate and will make the House vibrant through their constructive criticisms.

The Speaker sought active role and cooperation of the MPs in enlivening the Parliament session and strengthening the uninterrupted march forward of democracy.

Dr Shirin said the current Parliament will complete its tenure on January 24, 2014.
