RMG workers block highways for arrears, bonus in N’ganj

The workers of a garment factory blocked Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chittagong highways at Siddhirganj in Sadar upazila on Sunday, demanding that their arrears and Eid bonus be paid immediately.

Witnesses said some 1,000 workers of ‘Lipi Knitwear’ located in Sanarpar Bus Stand area went on the work abstention in the morning and staged demonstrations in front of the factory as the authorities have not yet paid their arrears and bonus on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

Later, they blocked the highways at Sanarpar Bus Stand, disputing vehicular movement for about one hour.

The agitated workers also damaged 10-12 passing vehicles.

Jinnah, sub-inspector of Siddhirganj Police Station, said the workers withdrew the blockade following assurance from the authorities to meet their demand.

The workers alleged that their salaries for several months fell into arrears.
