Rail-road blockade on cards if CG goes unheeded: BNP

As the government remains reluctant about its demand for reinstating the next polls under a non-party government, opposition BNP on Thursday threatened to go for an all-out movement like rail-road blockade to force the regime to accept it.

“If good sense doesn’t prevail upon them (govt), we’ll enforce road and rail path blockade and create a strong resistance in every region of the country to force the government to accept the demand for restoration of the  caretaker government,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Fakhrul issued the thereat while addressing a rally arranged by Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth wing of BNP, at Suhrawardy Udyan, marking the 6th ‘jail release day’ of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.

The BNP spokesman urged the Jubo Dal leaders and activists to take all-out preparations to wage a tougher movement to realise the opposition’s demand.

He accused the Prime Minister of blocking all ways for talks only to hang onto power by holding lopsided polls. “We want to tell the government that there’s still time, place a bill in the upcoming parliament session for reinstating the non-party caretaker government system. Or else, you won’t find any escape route in the face of public wrath.”

Criticising the Prime Minister for announcing an outline for holding the next polls under a partisan government, Fakhrul said they have no option but to take to the streets after her announcement. “We’re telling you for the last time to bring the caretaker government bill. Otherwise, we won’t have any alternative to waging a harsher movement.”

Mentioning that the Prime Minister during her visit to London had said a polls-time interim government would be formed after the expiry of the tenure of this regime, and opposition could join it if they wished, he said Hasina has now made a u-turn in fear of losing power after a massive debacle in the elections to five city corporations. “She is now saying the election will be held under her administration.”

Fakhrul praised the dynamic and unique leadership of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman and said Tarique became popular among the country’s people starting his politics from the grassroots level.

The BNP leader also alleged that and Tarique was arrested and brutally tortured as he had pursued the politics of welfare for the country’s poor people and protect democracy.

Presided over by Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, the rally was addressed by, among others, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas, vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman, Barkatullah Bulu, Jubo Dal general secretary Saiful Islam Nirob and senior vice chairman Abdus Salam Azad.
