Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her frustration at the rout of the pro-Awami League lawyers in elections to the Dhaka District Bar Association (DDA) and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
Hasina, who is also the ruling Awami League (AL) chief, has stressed unity among pro-AL lawyers in bars across the country.
She made her displeasure clear at a meeting with the newly elected functionaries of the Chittagong District Bar Association who called on her at her office on Tuesday.
Though the AL-backed panel won the Chittagong District Bar Association poll, pro-government panels recently lost at the Dhaka and Supreme Court bar associations.
Hasina said in-fighting among the pro-AL lawyers was chiefly behind the Dhaka and SC bar poll debacles.
“It’s misfortunate that pro-AL lawyers win in different bar association elections when the Awami League is in the opposition, but the scenario is reversed when it comes to power. In Dhaka, the pro-AL lawyers failed to win because they lacked unity.”
Referring to the SCBA polls, she said aspirants denied party nomination turn hostile. “But s/he doesn’t realise that the party suffers as a result.”
Hasina thanked the pro-AL lawyers of Chittagong for their unity, which ensured their win in the district bar election.
Citing various development initiatives, Hasina said Bangladesh had come to be regarded worldwide as role model of progress, adding it was important to keep up the pace.
She said her government had taken several measures to truly make Chittagong the country’s commercial capital.
Led by Chittagong District Bar Association President Anwarul Islam Chowdhury and General Secretary Abdur Rashid, a 53-member delegation of the Bar Association met the Prime Minister at her office.
