The ruling Awami League spent over Tk. 25 million in January 5 parliamentary election, according to its expense return submitted to the Election Commission on Thursday.
A three member-delegation, led by AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, handed over the 35-page report to EC acting secretary Sirazul Islam at his EC office.
It was signed by Al General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.
Golap told reporters that the money was spent on campaign rallies, processions, advertisements, campaign meetings by president of the party across the country and other related functions.
Two other members of the delegation were AL Election Conducting Committee Treasurer Abdul Haque and member ABM Riazul Kabir Kawshar.
EC acting secretary Sirazul Islam told UNB that two other political parties Jatiya Party (Manju) and Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) also submitted their polls expenses return to the commission.
BNF said it spent about Tk 5.80 million in the election.
The expenditures of JP (Manju) totaled Tk 1.23 million.
Under Representation of People’s Order (RPO) 1972 political parties are required to submit their election expenses return to the EC within 90 days after the election.
Sirazul Islam said the EC extended the deadline until June 3 after the participating parties failed to submit their report within the first 90 days.
He said nine other parties taking part in the polls are yet to submit their returns.
The parties are Jatiya Party (Ershad), Workers’ Party, Jasad, Tarikat Federation, Ganatontri Party, NAP, Gano Front, Khelafat Majlish and Bangladesh Islami Front.
