Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her frustrations that the United Nations is not playing any effective role to resolve the Gaza crisis.
Meeting a four-member delegation of female Iranian MPs led by Fatemeh Rahbar at her official residence on Wednesday afternoon, Hasina called upon the Muslim world to be vocally united against Israeli atrocities.
She was also critical of the failure of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Arab League in stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza, her Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury told reporters after the meeting.
“Those who always talk about human rights are playing a silent role on the Israeli aggression on Gaza. The UN is not playing an effective role,” she told the Iranian MPs.
“Occupation of Palestinian land by Israel could not be accepted in any way, and just rights of the Palestinians must be established one day,” she said.
Hasina told them about her cabinet’s adoption of a resolution condemning the Israeli atrocities.
The Iranian delegation praised Bangladesh’s role on Gaza issue.
“The delegation said the prime minister was a skilled leader of the nation and urged her to play a more important role in resolving the Gaza crisis,” Shameem Chowdhury said.
“They told her she could play a more prominent role in this crisis.”
Fatemeh Rahbar hoped that the global powers would come forward to this end by breaking their silence.
She also requested Hasina to take effective initiatives to open the Rafa Crossing between Gaza and Egypt.
Over 1,500 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in a month of military attacks by Israel in Gaza.
The delegation discussed women’s empowerment with the prime minister.
Hasina said there had been historic and brotherly relations between Bangladesh and Iran.
She said a Bangladesh parliamentary team would visit Iran soon.
Her Principal Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikdar and Press Secretary Chowdhury and Iranian Charge d’Affaires Reza Alaei were present.
