Place polls-time formula as per charter: Selim to BNP

Awami League presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim on Thursday urged the main opposition BNP to come up with a formula on election-time government as per the constitution for holding the next general election.

“You’re saying you wouldn’t participate in the election if it is held under a party government. You are saying you’ll participate in the polls under a caretaker government. But it’s contrary to the constitution. We wouldn’t go beyond the constitution. Give a formula as per the constitution,” he said.

The Awami League leader said this while addressing a discussion organised by Juba League at Mohanagar Natya Mancha marking the August 21 grenade attack.

Selim said the next election will be held within January 24 next under an interim government and no one will be able to resist it.

“If you (BNP) don’t take part in the polls, your fate will be like that of NAP Bhasani. You’ll be washed away into the Bay of Bengal after having been refused by the people of Bangladesh,” Selim added.

Pointing at BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the ruling party leader said, “Mirza Fakhrul is a liar. I’ve not seen a liar like him. If the Nobel Prize is given for lying, it’ll go to Fakhrul.”

Juba League general secretary Harun-or-Rashid, among others, spoke at the programme held with its chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury in the chair.
