Nor’wester, lightning kill 7 in Rajshahi, C’nawabganj

Seven people have been killed by nor’westers and a lightning strike in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts, reports UNB.

Of them, four people were killed and over 100 dwelling houses damaged as a storm swept through nine upazilas of Rajshahi on Sunday evening.

The deceased are Faridul Islam, 48, son of Azizul Islam of Sapura area of Boalia Police Station in the city, Munsur Rahman, 40, son of Harun-or-Rashid, 40, of Belghoaria in the city, Achhia Begum, 45, wife of Ansar Ali of Shyampur village in Charghat upazila, and Alam Ali Munshi, 50, son of Ataur Munshi of Kalabagan area in Godagari upazila.

Ward Master of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) Mosharraf Hossain said Achhia, Munsur and Faridul died at the hospital.

Achhia suffered injuries as a tree branch fell on her while Munsur sustained injuries after he fell on the road while running during the storm and Faridul was struck by a thunderbolt.

Officer-in-charge of Godagari police station Hifzul Alam Munshi said Alam was injured as a tree branch collapsed on his head during the storm. He later died at the upazila health complex.

Besides, the storm damaged crops on a vast track of land and uprooted trees in the nine upazilas.

In Chapainawabganj, two people were killed by a lightning strike and another died as a tree collapsed on him in Shibganj and Gomastapur upazila on Monday.

Chhobi Begum, 30, wife of Rupchan Ali, and Masuma Begum, 26, wife of Abdur Rashid, died on the spot as a thunderbolt struck them at Chakdaulatpur in Shibganj upazila while collecting mangoes during the storm.

Asabul Haque, 50, a van puller, died on the spot as a tree fell on his house during the storm at Nimtala in Gomastapur upazila in the afternoon.
