Police arrested 16 people and seized a microbus on Saturday afternoon from the house of city Awami League leader and councilor Nur Hossian, the prime accused in the case filed in connection with the abduction and killing of city panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his four associates.
Police cordoned off the residence of Nur Hosain, vice-president of Awami League Siddhirganj unit, at 10:45 am and arrested 16 people carrying out a three-hour drive in the house.
Police, however, did not disclose the names of the arrestees.
They also seized a green microbus, a bloodstained cloth and a knife from the house.
Additional DIG Khandaker Golam Faruq disclosed this at a press briefing at the office of Superintendent of Police here at noon
A team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) police reached the spot to examine the seized vehicle and other things.
Meanwhile, police arrested a couple from Jatrabari area in the capital for their suspected involvement in the kidnapping of businessman Syed Saiful Islam, who was freed by the kidnappers on Friday night.
Saiful Islam was picked up from Siddhirganj on Thursday night and released on Friday night, 26 hours after his kidnapping.
Police said another man was arrested along with a mobile phone set used by lawyer Chandan Kumer Sarker.
Police Super of the district Dr Muhiduddin said the police drive to hunt down the culprits is on.
Meanwhile, lawyers held a meeting in front of Narayanganj Press Club in the morning where they demanded immediate arrest of the people who were involved in the abduction and killing of the seven people, including councilor Nazrul Islam.
On Sunday last, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver, were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.
Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on Wednesday morning. Another body, believed to be of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on Thursday morning.
