The newly-elected Ameer (President) of Bangladesh Jamaat-e Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, visited the train accident spot in country’s east-central Brahmanbaria district on Tuesday evening.

The leader of the Bangladesh’s biggest Islamic party also went to the hospital to see the wounded people.

During the visit he was accompanied by central president of Jamaat’s student wing Bangladesh Islami Chattra Shibir, Mobarak Hossain, and some other leaders of the party.

Jamaat and Shibir leaders asked the injured about their physical condition and talked with the family members.

Dhaka Municipality North Ameer of Jamaat Mohammad Selim Uddin, Cumilla Municipality Ameer Kazi Deen Mohammad, Brahmanbaria District Ameer Syed Sarwar Siddiki and Brahmanbaria Shibir president Hafez Nurul Amin, among others, also accompanied Dr. Rahman.

Jamaat Ameer expressed concerns about repeated train accidents across the country in the recent periods.

Citing prime minister’s assurance of appointing qualified drivers in railway sector, he said that unskilled drivers had been appointed in this sector on political consideration.

“It proves that due to appointment of unskilled drivers in railway department in exchange of bribes and on basis of political partiality, such painful accidents are being occurred one after another”, he added.

The Jamaat leaders also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls in the accident.

At least 16 people were killed and around hundred were injured in a head-on-head collision between two intercity trains at Mondobhag Railway Crossing of Kosba Upazila in Brahmanbaria on early Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Jamaat central executive council member and Ameer of Dhaka Municipality South, Nurul Islam Bulbul, accused the government for mismanagement in country’s railway sector.

“Due to gross irregularities and mismanagement, repeated train accidents are being happened”, he said, adding that the issue of public safety is not on priority to this government as they have no accountability to the people.

Bulbul on Tuesday evening visited the wounded passengers who have been shifted from Brahmanbaria to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

He urged the government for arranging free treatment for the injured and due compensation for the families of the dead.
