Muhith depicts Basic Bank scam scenario in Parliament

Abul Mall Abdul MuhitFinance minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday said 27 bank officials, 56 organisations and eight surveyor organisations were involved in the much-talked-about Basic Bank loan scam, reports UNB news agency.

He said this while responding to a tabled starred question from Jatiya Party MP Selim Uddin (Sylhet-5) in Parliament.

The minister said the involvement of then chairman of the Board of Directors of Basic Bank Abdul Hye Bachhu was found in the reports of external audit firms appointed by Bangladesh Bank and Basic Bank in granting irregular loan, recruitment and promotion.

The involved persons are: Former managing directors AKM Sajedur Rahman and Kazi Fakhrul Islam, former additional managing director Sheikh Monjur Morshed, deputy managing directors Fazlus Sobhan and Kanak Kumar Purakayastha, suspended deputy managing director A Monayem Khan, deputy managing director M Selim, director generals Joynul Abedil Chowdhury, M Mozammel Hossain, M Moniruzzaman and Golam Faruk Khan, suspended director general Khandaker Shamim Hasan, sacked director general Mohammad Ali, former deputy director general Korban Ali,

deputy director general Omar Faruq, sacked deputy director general Shipar Ahmed, suspended deputy director general SM Waliullah, assistant director generals M Zahir Uddin, M Imrul Islam, Abdus Sabur and Abdus Sattar Khan, Polash Das Gupta and Iqramul Bari, former assistant director general Sarwar Hossain, manager M Muhibul Huq, sacked deputy manager SM Zahid Hasan and deputy manager NA Toufiqul Alam.

The surveyor organisations are: SD Survey Firm, Rupsha Surveyors, PSR, BDS Adjuster, Unique Survey Service Bureau, Professional Associates, Desh Paridarshan Company and IHS Inspection.

The finance minister told the House that the Finance Ministry on 6 July last year dismissed the board of directors of the Basic Bank and reconstituted it with an experienced banker as its chairman in the wake of the loan scam.

Bangladesh Bank on May 25 removed then managing director Kazi Fakhrul Imam for his irregularities and corruption.

Muhith mentioned that Anti Corruption Commission submitted First Information Report (FIR) against 56 organisations that took loan, owner or officials of eight surveyor organisations and 27 Bank officials.

The cases are now under investigation, he said.
Besides, Basic Bank also took punitive measurers against their officials as per its rules.
