MPs for action against TIB

Speaker Abdul Hamid and some ruling alliance MPs on Monday in parliament launched a blistering attack on TIB for its recent survey on lawmakers’ activities, terming the survey ‘flawed’ and ‘evil-designed’.

In response to MPs’ strong demand for taking actions against TIB for ‘undermining dignity of Parliament’ through the survey, the speaker said he would come up with a decision later in consultation with some senior lawmakers.

Some MPs including Tofail Ahmed and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim requested the speaker to convene a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on privileges and summon TIB officials to appear before it to prove their survey findings.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) in its survey report released on October 14 came up with shocking findings on MPs. It said 97 percent of the 149 sitting MPs surveyed by the TIB were involved in “negative activities,” including being involved in or supportive of criminal activities, misuse of government funds and influencing government decisions.
