A lighter vessel submerged in the Karnaphuli River as an oil tanker hit it at Silo Jetty in the port city on Thursday morning.
The incident took place at the jetty in Cement Crossing area around 9:30am when a Singapore flag-carrying oil tanker hit the vessel named ‘Pacific’ anchored there, said Captain M Shahjahan, member harbour of Chittagong port.
However, it could not be confirmed immediately whether the sunken vessel was loaded or empty.
There would not be any disruption in the movement of the port-bound ships through the river because the vessel remained affixed during sinking, added the captain.
