JOURNO ASSAULT Rony’s ‘embarrassment’ remark not true: Speaker

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday denied making any comment about not being embarrassed by ruling Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony’s act of beating up two journalists on July 20.

Talking to journalists at her office in parliament Shirin said, “I did not need to make such comment.”

Emerging from a meeting with the Speaker at her office in parliament on Tuesday, Rony said the Speaker assured him that neither she nor the parliament became embarrassed following his July 20 activities — beating up two journalists at his office.

Later at a press briefing Rony echoed his claims.

“The Speaker assured me that there was nothing embarrassing in it. She also asked me to discuss the issue with the party high-ups,” Rony claimed.

Rony on Saturday beat up reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul, members of a team that produces a crime-investigative show, Talash, for Independent TV, at his Topkhana Road office in the capital.

The reporters went to Rony’s office on information that a bribe of more than Tk 1 crore, sent from Patuakhali, was to reach the lawmaker at his office.
