Jamaat calls daylong hartal for Monday

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday called a nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Monday in protest against the punishment of three of its leaders by the International Crimes Tribunal -2 (ICT) on charge of contempt of court.

Quoting Jamaat Dhaka city unit assistant secretary Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud, Islami Chhatra Shibir central committee member Russell Ahmed told UNB that the Islamist party called the shutdown as the ICT-2 punished its three leaders.

He said the party will formally announced the shutdown programme through a press statement on its website some time later.

On Sunday, the ICT-2 punished the three Jamaat leaders for contempt of court.

They are Hamidur Rahman Azad, MP, acting secretary general of the party Rafiqul Islam Khan and assistant secretary general of Dhaka city unit Selim Uddin.

The court jailed the three months for Azad and Rafiq and also fined them Tk 3,000 each.

On the other, the court fined Selim Tk 1,000 and not to leave the court until the court proceeding ends for Sunday. Earlier, Selim sought unconditional apology for his comments.
