Director general of Islamic Foundation Shamim M Afzal on Monday claimed that the activists of Hefajat-e-Islam caused a damage of Tk 15.17 crore to Baitul Mukarram Market during Sunday’s violence.

Talking to reporters on the premises of the Baitul Mukkarram National Mosque in the evening, he said they process to file a case against thousands of unnamed Hefajat men with Paltan Police Station in connection with the incident.

Shamim Afzal said Hefajat activists carried out vandalism at the market and set fire to several shops and one of their buses on Sunday.

On that day, panic gripped the city due to widespread violence amid Hefajat-e-Islam’s Dhaka Siege programme and subsequent grand rally at Shapa Chattar that continued without a finishing timeline.

Three people were killed in clashes between Hefajat men and law enforcers in different areas of the capital.

Later in the afternoon, the Hefajat men went on the rampage and torched over 50 vehicles and many shops at Baitul Mukarram Market.
