Tensions escalated as a clash broke out between the activists of Hefajat-e-Islam and Shahbagh youths near Matsya Bhaban here on Saturday afternoon, leaving a pedestrian injured.
Witnesses said when the rally of Hefajat men at Shapla Chattar concluded several thousand activists of them tried to move towards Shahbagh Chattar through Ramna Park at about 4 am, triggering a chase and counter-chase between Shahbagh youths and Hefajat men.
A pedestrian was seriously injured during the trouble. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Later, police and the Shahbagh youths entered Ramna Park to prevent the Hefajat men from reaching Shahbagh Chattar.
Several crude bombs were also blasted during the clash.
Police fired several rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control.
