Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the government will correct itself taking lessons from the defeat of the 14-party alliance-supported candidate in the Gazipur City Corporation polls.

“We’ll investigate and analyse why people didn’t vote (for the ruling alliance candidate). We’ll draw on the defeat and correct out mistakes to turn the negative votes into positive ones,” he said while talking to reporters at his ministry.

The minister, however, described people’s common grievances against the ruling party for the one-after-another defeat of the Awami League-supported candidates. “All must think about the negative votes as this may affect the upcoming national election.”

When asked Gazipur was a stronghold of Awami League, he said there is nothing called fort to people. “They can break any fort if they lose trust (in any party).”

Terming the GCC polls result a ‘warning message’ for the government, Obaidul, also an Awami League presidium member, said, “We’ll do everything to bring back the trust of people during the next parliamentary elections.”

He also asked all to accept the GCC election result with a smiling face or with a melancholy face.

Responding to another query about BNP’s allegation of vote rigging in the GCC polls, the minister termed it baseless, saying, “The polls result has proved it.”

He also congratulated the winners in the GCC polls.
