BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday urged the government to quit as people have rejected it through silent ballots in the elections to five city corporations.
“The next general election must be held under a non-party caretaker government. The government has become isolated from people due to its misrule. So, people have rejected it through silent ballots in the city corporations’ polls,” he said.
Fakhrul made the remarks while talking to reporters after visiting flood-affected areas in the district.
The BNP leader called upon the government to take initiatives for restoration of the caretaker government system in the constitution. “Quit with respect after reinstating the caretaker government system in the national charter. Or else, people will realise their demand through a strong movement.”
The BNP spokesman visited flood-hit Munsipara, Khalpara, Tikiapara, Collgepara and Sonuapara areas.
He also distributed rice, pulse, vegetables and medicine among the flood victims.
The BNP leader alleged that though several thousands people are passing through a miserable life being hit by the flood, the government has taken no initiative to assuage their sufferings.
“The government is least bothered about people’s sufferings. They’re busy looting public money through extortion, tender manipulation and corruption,” Fakhrul said.
He demanded the government immediately stand beside the flood-hit people with relief good and financial assistance.
