Four people were killed and at least 10 others injured when a bus collided with an auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Kuakata highway in Patuakhali last night.
The deceased were identified as Kawyum Uddin, 50, of Galachipa upazila; Shilpi Rani, 40, of Galachipa; Tithi Rani, 23, of Bauphal upazila; and Miraj, 35, of Galachipa, said Md Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station.
The accident occurred around 11:45pm at Dhulu Gazi’s intersection near Basak Bazar in Sadar upazila.
Quoting locals, the OC said the Imran Travels bus was carrying around 35 passengers from Taltali in Barguna to Dhaka. When it reached the intersection, it collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
The bus then ran over the auto-rickshaw, lost control and fell into a roadside ditch. Locals said all four deceased were passengers of the auto-rickshaw.
Md Rejwan, station officer of Patuakhali Fire Service, said two units took part in the rescue operation.
Three bodies were recovered from the auto-rickshaw, which was trapped under the bus. Another victim died while undergoing treatment at Patuakhali 250-bed General Hospital, the OC said.
The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.
A passenger of the bus claimed the bus had been travelling at high speed from the beginning of the journey.
