Feasibility study on constructing tunnel under Jamuna: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said the government will conduct a feasibility study on constructing a tunnel under the Jamuna River.

She made the announcement while responding to a supplementary question from JP MP AKM Maidul Islam (Kurigram-3) during the PM’s question-answer session.

The Prime Minister said the tunnel would be constructed from Bahadurabad to Balasi Ghat point.

Hasina mentioned that a study is going on to construct a rail bridge over the Jamuna River from Bahadurabad to Fulchhari Ghat.

Replying to a starred question from M Faridul Huq Khan (Jamalpur-5), the premier said the government is advancing a project for the construction of a second rail bridge over the Jamun River at Bahadurabad point.

She said a feasibility study is going on to find out the possibility of constructing the rail bridge. The consulting firm started its work from November 10, 2012. It has been asked to submit its report by April 7 this year.

The cost of this bridge has been estimated to be Tk 16,800 crore and it has been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

This will be done under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) as the project cost is very high.
