Family members of the deceased and injured victims of the Rana Plaza disaster on Thursday received another installment of the compensation, amounting to 30 per cent of the total due.
A total of 2,967 people have received $4.7 million (Tk 36 crore), said Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed, member of the Rana Plaza Coordination Committee led by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The money has been deposited to the bank accounts of the people concerned, he added.
With the 30 per cent they received on Thursday, 70 per cent of the full compensation has been paid.
According to the claim form filed by the victims and family members, the amount of the full compensation is about $3 crore, which is about Tk 240 crore. However, $21.5 million has been deposited so far to the Rana Plaza donor’s trust fund, the international fund created for the compensation. Of the deposited money, 2,770 victims and family members have been paid about 40 per cent of the compensation they are entitled to in five installments last year.
“If enough money is deposited to the fund, we will be able to pay the rest of the compensation before the second anniversary of Rana Plaza on 24 April,” said Sultan.
Over 1100 workers were killed and many others injured when Rana Plaza collapsed in 2013.
